Launch of Season’s ‘African British Civil Rights Since The 1960s’. Keynote speaker: Community activist Lee Jasper, followed by Q&A and presentations to winners of ‘What civil rights mean to me, and why they are important’ youth essay competition by Harrow Mayor Cllr Nana Asante. Light refreshments available.

Surprise African British Civil Rights Film Screening/Q&A With Imruh Bakari. Friday Oct. 4, 6.30-9.30pm. £5 (online), £7 (at door), £2 (children)
A 'surprise' film screening, after which film-maker & lecturer Imruh Bakari ('Riots and Rumours of Riots' (1981); Director of Savannah Films, and Senior Lecturer in Film & Media Studies at the University of Winchester) will facilitate a post-screening Q&A focused on the topic: How far have we come in the quest for civil rights?
Light refreshments precede screening.

From Martin Luther King To Paul Stephenson in 1963. From Race Riots In Chicago To Cardiff in 1919. How Far Have We Come? Friday Oct. 25, 5-7pm. FreeLeader of the Chicago’s Live The Spirit Big Band Ernest Dawkins, talks about the historical background to the compositions, ‘I Have A Dream’ inspired ‘A Deferred Dream Or A Dream Come True?’, and the 1919 Chicago race riots inspired ‘1919’. History consultant Kwaku contrasts with the British experience, such as the Paul Stephenson-led Bristol Bus Boycott and the 1919 Cardiff race riots.
